Building A Christ-Centered Home

Writer's picture: Josh JacquardJosh Jacquard

Joshua 24:15—"And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD."

Joshua made a bold statement when he said this. He was taking a stand and making it clear that his home would be different. As Christians, we need to do the same. Our homes should be places of peace, worship, and spiritual growth—not just somewhere to eat, sleep, and relax. So, how do we build a home that honors God? Let’s talk about some practical steps.

1. Keep Christ at the Center

Every strong home has a solid foundation, and Jesus is the only foundation that lasts.

Matthew 7:24-25—"Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock."

So how do we build on that rock?

  • Read the Bible together. Even just a few verses a day can make a difference.

  • Pray as a family. Before meals, before bed, and whenever there’s a need.

  • Make church a priority. Worshiping together strengthens your faith.

  • Teach your kids about Jesus every day. That’s not just the church’s job—it starts at home!

Deuteronomy 6:6-7—"And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up."

2. Make Your Home a Place of Worship

A Christian home should feel different. It should be a place where God is honored, and worship happens naturally.

  • Play Christian music that lifts your spirit and sets the tone for your home.

  • Hang up Scripture verses as reminders of God’s promises.

  • Talk about what God has done for your family. Gratitude is a form of worship!

  • Have family devotions. Even 10 minutes of talking about God can make a big impact.

3. Keep the World’s Influence Out

Joshua was clear—his home wouldn’t follow the ways of the world. We need to have the same mindset today.

Romans 12:2—"And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God."

Here’s how to keep your home set apart:

  • Be careful about what you watch and listen to. Does it honor God or promote sin?

  • Surround yourself with godly influences. This includes friends and media choices.

  • Watch how you speak. The words used in your home should reflect Christ.

Ephesians 4:29—"Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers."

4. Build Strong Family Relationships

A Christ-centered home isn’t just about rules—it’s about love. Your family should feel encouraged, not just corrected.

1 Corinthians 13:4-7—"Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things."

Here’s how to strengthen your family:

  • Spend quality time together. Meals, games, and conversations matter.

  • Practice forgiveness. Don’t let bitterness take root.

Ephesians 4:32—"And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you."

  • Encourage each other. Words have power—use them to build each other up.

5. Use Your Home for Ministry

A Christ-centered home isn’t just for your family—it should also be a place where others see Jesus.

Hebrews 13:2—"Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares."

Here are a few ways to use your home for God’s glory:

  • Host Bible studies or prayer groups.

  • Welcome guests with Christ-like hospitality.

  • Serve others—provide meals, encouragement, and support when needed.

Joshua 24:15 isn’t just a nice verse to put on the wall—it’s a challenge to live by. Our homes should be different from the world. They should be places of peace, worship, and separation unto God. When we choose to make Christ the foundation, surround ourselves with worship, guard against worldly influences, strengthen family bonds, and use our homes for ministry, we create a home that truly honors the Lord.

So, what kind of home will you choose to build?
